BAROLO MANZONE GIOVANNI – Monforte d’Alba

The Manzone family started making wine in 1925 in the village of Monforte. They are part of the “green experience” which certifies responsible farming practices in the area. We love Giovanni Manzone’s wines from Monforte d’Alba because they are spicy, powerful with those strong Barolo tannins and flavors coming from the older Eastern soils. Although we tried some even older vintages, we believe that 2011 had the best balance between being fresh yet big, enjoyable still at so many stages.

BAROLO GREMOLERE RISERVA 2011 –  Single vineyard in Monforte d’Alba

60 MONTHS AGED IN OAK

THE 2011 VINTAGE:

2011 is considered a warmer vintage and in my opinion somewhat underrated. Most 11s are nice to drink now with a few years of aging potential left. They will be big and fruity with softer tannins. Gramolere vineyard is located on a hill with a higher elevation, and therefore has a slightly cooler microclimate and helps in warmer years to maintain freshness.

TASTING NOTES:

On the nose, at first ripe fruits and floral with following notes of nutmeg and pepper. On the palate it is energetic and structured, with tastes of vanilla and tobacco ending with a long finish.

BEST PAIRED WITH:

Truffle dishes, game, braised beef, wild. boar and aged cheeses.
