Jazz and hiking? goosebumps and summer? Polenta in the middle of the day in July? Who would’ve thunk!

This Sunday was a surprise all the way around. We knew we were going for a walk in the mountains somewhere but had no idea where my friend Giovanni was about to take us. I was so excited because in all my five years here so close to the mountains I had never taken advantage of them in the summer like this by actually going hiking up to a “rifugio”. On Sunday when the alarm sounded at 7.30 am …I was rethinking the whole thing again!

Well off we went and met Giovanni and Michele. A beautiful tan italian looking couple. Giovanni is a jazz drummer so he knew about this event in Valle Pellice where jazz musicians would accompany us all the way up the trails and then play while we ate in the rifugio restaurant at the top. It was awesome.

The day couldn’t have been better. The hike started off at a huge waterfall and went up for about two hours. when we got to the top we were starving.

WHAT I LEARNED 1: – EAT BREAKFAST BEFORE HIKING IN THE MOUNTAINS

We reserved a place on the beautiful balcony and waited on the grass hopeful to catch some rays. Instead I had goosebumps the whole time and was FREEZING! the breeze was so cold! Bummer. As soon as we sat down, our only choice was Polenta. As soon as the polenta came out the sun started beating down and sizzling all the meats on the table. My hunger for polenta quickly subsided as sweat beads were rolling off my forehead. Back to take a little nap in the fields and back came a huge grey cloud and back came the goosebumps. Oh well!

WHAT I LEARNED 2: – ALWAYS TAKE A HEAVY SWEATSHIRT OR FLEECE IN THE MOUNTAINS NO MATTER HOW HOT AND NICE IT LOOKS

We went inside to listen to the freestyling musicians and had a great time. As we headed downhill we filled the time with nice conversation and laughs and concluded our beautiful Sunday.

Valle Pelice is a community populated by the Waldesian religion in the Province of Turin Piedmont. They are known for their hocky team! It is only about an hour from Saluzzo and is lucky to have many waterfulls and beautiful landscapes. It is situated practically behind Monviso. I highly recommend this place for a pleasant easy to medium hike.
